LIFELINES EXHIBITION 6TH APRIL - 31ST AUGUST 2024 |
It’s easy to be glib about how weaving is embedded in our language/culture. We can talk about 'keeping the thread’ (of a conversation); ‘spinning a yarn’ and how it has contributed to the ‘fabric of society’. It is important to unwrap some of our local history and bring it to the attention of our young people who have been given the opportunity to express their response through various media. These responses form part of this exhibition and can be seen alongside the artwork of local artists who have in turn produced a body of work in response to weaving related archive material held in the Angus Collection.
Artists featured in exhibition: Maureen Crosbie (Glass), Bebe Geen (Textiles), Ros Macdonald (Painting and Printmaking), Maralyn Reed-Wood (Ceramics)
and Pupils from Tannadice primary School

ENRICH/ADORN EXHIBITION 6TH APRIL - 31ST AUGUST |
Living in Angus you become aware of the annual ritual of migration. Each year the animals and people take their place and slowly transform the towns and communities, helping to create a vibrant identity. This exhibition will focus on how this transforms the environment and takes a close look at the ways in which the towns and countryside are being transformed. Focussing on people, place and animals it will create a rich tapestry of art works designed for the Montrose museum. Angus Creative artists involved include: Astrid Weigel (Textiles),Amanda Waite (Painter), Susan Stehli (Textiles), Marjorie Gourlay (Ceramics)and Michelle Hewitt (wildlife artist).

Amanda Waite
East Lodge, Waulkmill, Letham Grange, Arbroath DD114RL
My art practice is story telling through surreal portraiture with a lean towards disrupted realism. My commissioned portraits combine oils with symbolic images juxtaposed within the cyanotype print process . My abstracts are painted on basswood panels inspired from natural objects found along the coastline using creative mark making.
When not writing novels and poetry, I can be found helping others to do the same. I’m experienced in all aspects of teaching creative writing (prose, poetry, non-fiction) and facilitate workshops and longer courses, both in person and online. I have a keen interest in the therapeutic value of writing, and work with various charities and organisations, aiding mental wellbeing through creativity.

Maralyn Reed-Wood Porcelain
The Workshop, Park Cottage, Careston, Brechin, Angus DD9 6RU
I hand build everything using slabs and sprig mounds. I have been collecting unusual textures and forms for thirty years which I then use in my own idiosyncratic way to produce bowls, pots, figures and ( sometimes) bizarre sculptures. I have run classes but am now disabled and only teach on occasion. There will be a table of good second’s available for a donation for the refugee crisis.
Park Cottage is easy to find being only building in that post code. Opposite Angus Grill Restaurant on the A90 outside Brechin (3 miles) set your satnav to DD9 6RU look for the signs. Maralyn will have a clay table for all, teaching sessions and demonstrations of her methods.

The Signal Tower was the only means of communicating with the iconic Bell Rock lighthouse and as its name suggests the primary function was to be a tool of visual communication. This exhibition explores ways in which we send and receive messages today using photography/ceramics/recycled plastic/sound and draws on Angus Council Collections managed by ANGUSalive Museums, Galleries

Situated beside Arbroath harbour on the A92. Wheelchair access to lower floors. Computer system provides information in regard to upper floor. The museum is a 10-15 minute walk from the train station. Off street parking is available in Angus Council sites (charges apply).

Gallus Glass
Folda, 102 roods, Kirriemuir dd8 4hq
I am a graduate of Glasgow School Of Art , Honours Degree in Drawing and Painting 1983. I started to work in stained glass as a complement to my painting.
I specialising in original, affordable free hanging leaded glass panels in contemporary and traditionally based designs. But also work on commissions, large and small, for individual clients and undertake repair and restoration work.
I am influenced by the dominating Angus landscapes and by the tradition of historical stained glass work, translating them into my own contemporary style.
The glass has a huge range of possibilities of colour, intensity and texture and this can often dictate the design. Stained glass is experiencing a revival in interest as people realise the value of traditional crafts. Glass panels, however small, are always a point of focus in the home or public environment and respond well to changes in light as the day and seasons progress.
Lately I have been exploring narrative pieces that represent People Places and Time.
I am lucky enough to be able to work at home and have had a spectacular bespoke studio built for me in my garden
on the left, going up Roods, entry to the drive is directly behind Mc Gregor's Land and just before bench. Studio is situated through large wooden gates, at bottom of the garden. Parking available down drive, for adventurous drivers, alternatively parking can be found on the next street up on left, West Hillbank Road, at the church.

Sarah Rees Lloyd Ceramics
17 Dalhousie Street
Brechin, Angus DD97BB
Sarah Rees Lloyd has a B.A.Hons in Three Dimensional Design - Wood, Metal, Ceramics & Glass - Manchester Polytechnic.
Sarah set up a studio to design functional ceramics.
Sarah's work distils organic and geometric forms predominantly found in the glades, moorlands and shorelines of the Angus Glens and coastal Scotland. This directly correlates and influences the structure and surface of her work.
Sarah also draws from her South Asian heritage, specifically the rich vibrant hues applied to temple architecture in Tamil Nadu, which influence the form and surface of her work.
Pieces are produced in small batches from stoneware clay that has crushed flecks and spangles wedged into the clay body, creating a unique crystalline speckling across the surface of each piece.
Sarah has developed her own specific rich colour hues in matt, satin and high gloss. The glazes have been trialled and tested to fit and enhance each piece.
Bus - Alight at St Ninians Square, Brechin. Car - Parking is available on Dalhousie Street, however it is limited.

Ros Macdonald
Steading House Studio, Emmock Farm, Emmock Road, Tealing, Angus
My aim is to achieve bold, punchy pieces of abstract naturalism. I work mainly in acrylic ink and the beauty of my native Angus inspires me, but I love the Scottish coastline in all forms. I try to achieve an individual approach to my work and enjoy experimenting with textures and colour reflecting the seasons. I also have a quirky fun approach to my print work that often feature the seaside, my garden visitors and Scottish wildlife. My woodcuts are of Scottish Lighthouses. My work can be seen during Open Studios at the Gallery Flat (Venue 6).

Saela Ceramics
15 Muirton Road, DD11 3HQ
I use whichever artistic practice I think will best suit my vision, performance, painting, ceramics, research and book creation.
I work in the themes of culture, heritage and environment. Looking at where we live and the impacts of history on modern day living.
I make unique quilts, art quilts and textile-based art and love combining both traditional and modern patchwork designs in my work.
I am also passionate about natural dyeing processes, using anything from kitchen waste to locally found plants as well as some bought plant-based dyes or even found objects to create pattern and texture in my work. My focus is moving more and more towards using naturally dyed upcycled textiles to make quilts and textile-based art works, letting the colours and shapes of nature tell a story.
My inspiration for quilts and art works comes from all kinds of things - from nature to a song title or phrase. Anything can spark an idea, which may develop in my mind for months before actually taking shape in the real world.
I also teach patchwork and quilting, textile art and natural dyeing at hArt & Sewl (Venue 24) and for private groups.
View my work all year round at hArt & Sewl (Venue 18), 94 High street Arbroath, Wednesday-Saturday, 10.30-4.00, and at Montrose Museum (Venue 23) from 6 April until end of August 2024.

Adam Geary
Puddledub Cottage, Guthrie, Forfar DD82SN

Publishing allows me to reach a diverse, international audience with high quality, accessible and affordable books /prints that are easy to buy and collect. My books and photographs are exhibited widely and appear in many collections worldwide. I like being outside, searching for images and exploring new places; looking for poetry in the everyday and being excited by the visual world. I take inspiration and influence from many places across the arts and my work is a reflection of this. It really is all about the photographs and the books, however!
